Today I am excited to launch this new website devoted to sharing outdoor photograph tips with all of you who love exploring nature and having adventures with your cameras. While we’re just getting started, I feel that there are already some great tips to watch and read through and I hope you find it a place you visit often to learn, see some great images, and share your own work.In addition to hearing from me on this site, you will also benefit from reading tips from other great outdoor photographers and teachers. Over the course of the next several months, you’ll gain insights from Bill Campbell, Robert Rodriguez Jr., Bret Edge, Corey Hilz, and Charlie Borland, all of whom I reached out to not only because they are accomplished photographers, but because they all have different and compelling ways of explaining photographic technique. Having their points of view should greatly enhance this site and I am grateful for their participation. You can read their Prednisone dosage for dogs.
To get things started, I’m offering a free ten-week course starting Wednesday, February 15th. Each week, I’ll post a new video with a photo tip from the “In he Field” section of my book, The AMC Guide to Outdoor Digital Photography. In the post description, I’ll also post an assignment, that will encourage you to practice the tip. By posting your photos from the assignment on our Flickr Group, you can share your photos with the group, get feedback from other photographers, and have the chance to win a copy of my book, as once a week I’ll be choosing a photo from the group to critique and giving the photographer a book. There’s no need to “enroll” in the course – just visit the site once a week, watch the video and submit your photos. If you sign up for my newsletter (look for the sign-up on he bottom of the home page), you’ll get an e-mail from me when I post a new video.
Here’s the course schedule:
Week 1, February 15th – Maximize the Light
Week 2, February 22nd – Exposure Basics: Using Your Histogram
Week 3, February 29th – Composition Basics: Balance and the Rule of Thirds
Week 4, March 7th – Composition: Dominance and Simplicity
Week 5, March 14th – Composition: Focal Length and Perspective, Visual Depth, and Scale
Week 6, March 21st – Creative Use of Depth of Field
Week 7, March 28th – Motion, ISO, and Shutter Speeds
Week 8, April 4th – Shooting Sharp
Week 9, April 11th – Using Filters
Week 10, April 18th – Putting it all Together
I’ll be critiquing my first photo for the course next Thursday (Feb. 16th), so if you want to get started participating in the course, go ahead and start adding photos to the Flickr Group this week. This course should be a great way to get in photographic shape for spring and summer and I look forward to hearing from you over the the next few months!

Best of luck with your new website. I am passing the information on to the members of the Boston Camera Club.
Henry
Thanks Henry!
Great idea Jerry. It will help us get out and get to work. I see Robert Rodriguez is going to be a guest instructor. I have attended workshops with Robert (and you) and think that you both are wonderful. Hoping to go to Moab with Robert this Spring if he does it and maybe see Bret Edge there. I look forward to the inastruction and seeing the results.
Bill Bogle, Jr.
Thanks Bill – we’ll do our best to share some helpful info. Moab in the spring sounds good to me – wish I could join you guys!
Great idea Jerry! I look forward to being an active participant in your new website.
Though it’s often hard to get outside in the Pacific Northwet, I’m looking forward to this series.
Could you consider adding an RSS feed to your blog though?
Hi Derek,
Thanks for pointing out the lack of an RSS feed. You can find it now at the bottom of each page on the site.
I hope you can find a way to get out often out there – there are some amazing photo ops in your neck of the woods.
Best,
-Jerry
Jerry,
I enjoyed your book. Good combination of a review of the thinks I should know but don’t always think about as well some new stuff to apply. I forwarded your new website info to the York Art Association’s Photo Group.
Tom
Thanks Tom!
Jerry,
Went to your talk last night @ Rye Public Library. I got more ideas and concepts from you in an hour than I have been able to pick up in the last year. Thanks and look forward to the on line version.
Michael
You’re welcome Michael – glad you liked the presetation! Thanks for visiting the site.
Thank you for your generosity Jerry! It’s not often a professional will offer video instruction for free! My passion for outdoor photography has been waining… this might be just the prescription I need to get back out there!
Mike
You’re welcome Mike! I’ll be so happy if this series inspires you to get out and shoot more!
Heard about your course and your book through YAA. Have been shooting
outdoor and nature photography since before the digital age. Think I
could benefit from the insructions and am thankful for your generosity in offering them. Am willing to share, of course.
